Sighting in Saint-Brandan, January 4, 2015

Côtes-d'Armor, Bretagne, France

Sighting on January 4, 2015 in Saint-Brandan (Côtes-d'Armor, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Around 7:20 pm, a witness and their spouse were sitting in their car when they noticed three fixed, orange-yellow points of light in the sky. They watched them for about five minutes, after which the three lights went out one after another.

The investigation found that orange-yellow balls going out one by one on a weekend evening strongly suggest Thai lanterns, most likely released nearby for the start-of-year festivities. Their apparent lack of movement fits with the very light southerly wind of 2 to 4 km/h recorded by the weather station at Saint-Brieuc. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns. To date, it has received no other testimony relating to this observation.
