Sighting in Saint-Joseph, March 17, 1994

La Réunion, France

Sighting on March 17, 1994 in Saint-Joseph (La Réunion, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At around 8:00 p.m., a witness contacted the gendarmes to report a turquoise-green light over the sea, with a red dot spinning at high speed. The gendarmes patrolled for about an hour but did not see the phenomenon. That same evening, pupils from a secondary school were watching the sky hoping to see Jupiter rise; they noticed nothing else.

On 3 April the phenomenon appeared again, and several witnesses saw it. No aircraft could be identified. According to the GEIPAN, the characteristics of the sighting suggested reflections from the use of a laser. The case was classed B, probably identified, as most likely caused by a laser beam.
