Sighting in Saint-Pierre-Quiberon, April 17, 2011
Morbihan, Bretagne, France
Sighting on April 17, 2011 in Saint-Pierre-Quiberon (Morbihan, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).
What happened
Two witnesses watched lights drift silently over the ocean on a Sunday evening, between 9:50 and 10:10 pm, a span of roughly twenty minutes.
GEIPAN's investigation found that the description matched that of Thai lanterns in every respect. The wind was blowing from the east or north-east, which fitted the direction in which the lights moved. The only unusual point was that the sighting took place on a Sunday, which is not the day lanterns are usually released, but it was during the school holidays.
The case was classified B, probably identified: the lights moving silently across the sky were most likely Thai lanterns.
