Sighting in Sainte-Suzanne, September 29, 2009

La Réunion, France

Sighting on September 29, 2009 in Sainte-Suzanne (La Réunion, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class A).

What happened

On several consecutive evenings, two witnesses noticed a fluorescent green light rising vertically into the sky between 10 p.m. and midnight. A gendarme confirmed having also seen this glow in the sky at the same times.

The gendarmerie investigation established that the atmosphere and cyclone research laboratory of the Faculty of Sciences of Saint-Denis regularly uses a laser to study weather phenomena at night. The fixed, fluorescent green light the witnesses described matched this device in every respect. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A: it was a laser beam used for meteorological research.
