What happened
At around 10:20 p.m., a witness lying on their back and looking toward the zenith saw a translucent, triangular shape cross the sky very quickly, which intrigued them. They noticed no sound, no flashing and no trail. The phenomenon moved from the southwest to the northeast, covering a few tens of degrees in about one second. Only one account was collected.
The investigation first checked the spaceflight context using the Calsky website. The International Space Station was passing from 10:20 to 10:25 p.m., from west to east at low elevation. This coincided with the sighting, but the station was quite far from the direction in which the witness was looking. The speed of the phenomenon and the fact that the Perseids were active led to the idea of three simultaneous shooting stars, possibly from the same body. That hypothesis does not explain the hollow triangular shape the witness described; the shape may have been a perceptual illusion, though this could not be confirmed. When questioned by phone, the witness stated that the brightness of the points of light did not resemble that of a shooting star.
The observation was very short and made by a single witness, so the phenomenon could not be characterized in detail. GEIPAN classified the case "C" because of insufficient information and a lack of corroboration.
