Sighting in San-Martino-di-Lota, August 30, 2009

France

Sighting on August 30, 2009 in San-Martino-di-Lota (France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

On the night of 30 to 31 August 2009 (the exact date is uncertain), a witness was on the terrace of their home when they noticed two flashing lights hanging motionless above the sea. Looking through binoculars, they saw that the lights were joined by a flat, elongated base that looked like a line. After twenty to thirty minutes of observation, the object moved away toward the east.

The witness later drew what they had seen on an old photograph, which they sent to GEIPAN. They put the sighting at around 2:30 a.m., but the investigator did not validate that time. No other witness account was collected.

The investigation considered the twinkling of stars or planets, lights from boats, and lights on the island of Pianosa, but these explanations were judged unlikely. GEIPAN considers the case to be actually not very strange. However, the testimony lacks substance and the idea of lights on the sea could not be confirmed, so no clear conclusion could be reached. The case was classified C (insufficient data) because of the inconsistencies noted.
