Sighting in Vieussan, October 5, 2014

Hérault, Occitanie, France

Sighting on October 5, 2014 in Vieussan (Hérault, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 10:30 p.m., three people noticed a bright red luminous object in the night sky above a hamlet. At first it stayed in place, then it began to move, gaining height as it headed toward Roquebrun. The witnesses eventually lost sight of it toward the southeast. Two of them recorded their account in a gendarmerie report. No other testimony was submitted to the gendarmerie or to the town hall.

The investigation looked at several objective elements: the way the object drifted with the wind, its color, its brightness, its shape and how long it was observed. On that basis, GEIPAN concluded that it was probably a sky lantern, also called a "Thai lantern." The case was classified B, a probable sighting of a Thai lantern.
