Sighting in Arudy, March 1, 1992

Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on March 1, 1992 in Arudy (Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At around 3:30 a.m., a witness and about ten guests at their home saw a luminous mass moving slowly across the sky. It left a trail of several different colors behind it. None of the guests was interviewed during the investigation.

At the same time, elsewhere in the département, other witnesses traveling by car saw a similar phenomenon that lasted 30 to 40 seconds. Each account is fairly brief, but taken together they suggest the sighting was an atmospheric re-entry. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: a probable observation of an atmospheric re-entry.

Account rewritten by SkyUnknown from the investigation report published by GEIPAN (CNES). The original text and case documents are on the official record.
