Sighting in Béziers, June 21, 1997

Hérault, Occitanie, France

Sighting on June 21, 1997 in Béziers (Hérault, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

The case was reported to the gendarmerie by a local resident, two years after the events, rather than by the witnesses themselves. According to this account, the resident's son and daughter-in-law were driving along the N609 out of Béziers around midnight when they noticed a flattened, egg-shaped craft. It gave off white lights that were described as not dazzling. The object stayed above their car for the whole journey, as if following it, for about 45 minutes. The passenger said it appeared and disappeared at regular intervals. It was roughly 50 metres above the ground, and the two occupants heard no particular noise.

No other witness account was gathered. The gendarmerie's inquiries did not identify any aircraft that could match the sighting. The two direct witnesses lived in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and had already returned home when the investigation took place, so they could not be interviewed. The case is known only through a third party who saw nothing personally. GEIPAN judged the case to have very low consistency and classified it C, for lack of information, since there was no direct testimony at all.
