Sighting in Joigny, March 30, 2009

Yonne, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on March 30, 2009 in Joigny (Yonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

At 5:10 p.m., a family was travelling by car when they noticed a luminous phenomenon crossing the sky quickly and silently. It followed a straight path. It was egg-shaped, light green and very bright, and left a silvery trail behind it. It then vanished suddenly.

GEIPAN noted that these features match those of a bolide, meaning a meteoroid entering the atmosphere. No other witness accounts were gathered, so this hypothesis could not be confirmed with certainty. The case was therefore classified B: a probable bolide sighting, most likely caused by a meteoroid (meteorite) entering the atmosphere.
