Sighting in Levernois, February 22, 1995

After 10:30 pm, three members of one family, two adults and a 12-year-old child, noticed a bright light above their home. They watched it through a skylight and described it as a large, very bright white star. Their accounts differ on how it moved: one spoke of a fairly slow speed, another of it standing still, and another of it "repositioning" a little further away without any visible motion. Most of them put the observation at two to three minutes; one witness mentioned fifteen minutes, and a period of stillness of about 30 seconds.

The investigation concluded that they had probably seen the Mir space station, which was visible in the sky at that date and time. The shape, colour and size described fit, as does the apparent speed. Mir was indeed moving toward the south-southeast, and the length of its pass matches the short observation. The fifteen minutes probably refer to time spent watching after the light had vanished. The "repositioning" is consistent with the rapid brightness changes of some satellites. The 30-second stillness, however, requires specific assumptions, such as an overestimated duration or confusion with a nearby star, which lowers the probability of the hypothesis somewhat without ruling it out.

The case's consistency is poor: the data are imprecise and sometimes contradictory, with no angular measurements and no detailed timeline. The child, who had been made aware of UFOs by a class that same day and was looking for one that evening, may have created an atmosphere of strangeness among the parents. This is still enough to support the Mir hypothesis. The case, first classified D, was re-examined and classified B.
