What happened
Four witnesses reported to the gendarmerie that they had seen lights in the evening or early in the day between 28 and 31 December 1994. Their statements were recorded together in a single report. The descriptions were vague and not very consistent. When the file was re-examined, the GEIPAN separated the observations into three groups of phenomena.
The first was seen by two witnesses on 29 December, between 7:00 and 7:30 pm, in the direction of the sea. They described flat, very long flashes, flashes bigger than normal, one of which seemed to move, and a bright blue light towards Binic, possibly above the water. The gendarmerie inquiry confirmed that there was a storm out at sea, visible from the coast, early that evening. The GEIPAN considered this a probable observation of a thunderstorm (B).
The second group was made up of bright white lights seen by one witness on 29, 30 and 31 December between 6:00 and 6:45 am, joined by another witness on the 31st. They did not move and always appeared in the same direction. In two cases they were visible for more than 40 minutes, through the kitchen window, which faced south-east. A reconstruction places Venus in that direction, about ten degrees above the horizon, so this was classed as a probable observation of Venus (B).
The remaining phenomena, seen by two witnesses on 31 December and by a single witness around 7:00 pm on 28 December, were too brief, too imprecise and inconsistent from one account to another. They could have been car headlights or urban lights, in a context shaped by the earlier sightings. For lack of reliable information, the case is classed C.
