What happened
Between 28 and 31 December 1994, four witnesses went to the gendarmerie in the Côtes-d'Armor to report sightings made in the evening or early in the morning. Their statements were all recorded in a single report. The descriptions were vague and not very consistent, and the re-examination of the file separated three groups of phenomena.
On 29 December, between 7:00 and 7:30 pm, two witnesses saw flashes of light that they compared to lightning or camera flashes, only much bigger. One of them seemed to move. The lights were in the direction of the sea. The gendarmerie inquiry confirmed that a thunderstorm was present out at sea, visible from the coast, in the early evening of that day. GEIPAN rated this sighting B: probably a thunderstorm.
On 29, 30 and 31 December, one witness saw a bright white light at around 6:00 am, lasting until about 6:45 am, with a second witness joining on the last day. It did not move, lasted over 40 minutes in two cases, and appeared in the same direction each time, through the kitchen window facing south-east. A reconstruction placed Venus in that direction (about 130°), roughly ten degrees above the horizon. Rating B: probably Venus.
On 31 December, two witnesses briefly noticed some lights, and one witness had reported others on 28 December. These very short accounts were inconsistent with each other and could not be analysed reliably. Ordinary lights such as car headlights or urban lighting may have been mistaken for something else, in a context shaped by the earlier sightings. Rating C: lack of reliable information. The case as a whole remains classified C.
