What happened

Between 4:25 and 4:50 a.m., two witnesses noticed a motionless, very bright point of light in the sky. They took photographs of it. As daybreak approached, its brightness gradually faded.

The GEIPAN investigation concluded that the witnesses most likely saw the planet Jupiter, which was especially easy to see at that time of year, with an apparent magnitude of about -2.5 and an angular diameter of about 40 arcseconds. The case was classified B, meaning probably identified.
