Sighting in Saint-Martin-de-Crau, August 1991

Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting in August 1991 in Saint-Martin-de-Crau (Bouches-du-Rhône, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

In mid-August 1991, at around 10:30 pm, the witness noticed a group of white points of light moving erratically across the sky, very high up. The points then began to move as if in a choreographed display and formed various geometric shapes. This went on for about five minutes. At the end, all the points drew together into a single one, which vanished, leaving a brief phosphorescent trail behind it.

The GEIPAN investigation concluded that the witness most probably saw a discotheque laser projector operating for a short time, a device that typically produces this kind of pattern in the sky. The witness also mentioned that a nightclub in a neighbouring village had equipment of this kind. The case was classified B, meaning probably identified.
