Sighting in Saint-Paul, March 21, 2009

La Réunion, France

Sighting on March 21, 2009 in Saint-Paul (La Réunion, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a reflection or photographic artefact (class B).

What happened

On an evening with a clear, cloudless sky, a witness had their picture taken. When they looked at the digital photo afterwards, they noticed a white spot in the sky that puzzled them. Nothing unusual had been seen when the picture was taken, so there was no direct observation.

The GEIPAN investigation favored an insect, or possibly a small bird, passing close to the subject just as the photo was taken with a flash. The animal would have been brightly lit by the flash, which accounts for the white spot. The case was classified B: probably an insect passing through the camera's field of view.
