Sighting in Tavaco, August 8, 1996

France

Sighting on August 8, 1996 in Tavaco (France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).

What happened

Four witnesses noticed lights moving in circles at high speed during the night, between about 2:30 and 3:30 a.m. The sighting therefore lasted roughly an hour. The source gives no information on the colour, apparent size or weather, nor on what the witnesses were doing at the time.

The GEIPAN investigation, together with the witness accounts, led to the conclusion that the witnesses had most probably seen the effects of a laser projector. It was being used for a party held in a neighbouring village. The case was classified B (probably identified): the lights were most likely produced by an advertising laser projector.
