Sighting in Voreppe, September 6, 1998

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on September 6, 1998 in Voreppe (Isère, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).

What happened

At around 8 p.m., several witnesses who were in their garden noticed a circular object above a tree on a neighbouring property. Each described it with different sizes and colours, but several of them noted that it seemed to have legs. It first hung motionless above the tree, then began to drift slowly across the sky. One of the witnesses managed to film it for a few minutes until it vanished completely.

A few days later, a person who had learned of the sighting through the press went to the gendarmerie. They explained that a child's helium balloon, shaped and coloured like a ladybird with large legs, had got away: it had been poorly secured to their son's wrist and floated slowly off in the same area and at the same time as the sighting. GEIPAN concluded that the witnesses had seen this balloon moving through the air, and classified the case as A (identified).
